Susanna’s Surprise Birthday!

Susanna's Surprise Birthday

If you haven’t already heard, I’ve accepted a part-time job as an event planner! With my sister’s 40th Birthday this year, my parents and I decided that we had to make it extra special. We were a little late to the game planning her surprise because initially a trip to Hawaii was going to be her big celebration, but we realized celebrating such a milestone without her friends by her side just wouldn’t cut it, so we’re now in crunch time for picking a theme and getting all the logistics into place. Since riding a cable car has always been on Susanna’s to-do list, we made that our theme and planned this ‘Susanna Style’ meaning every detail from the invitation to the party favors to the food and overall experience needed to be thought through carefully. In our family, Susanna is usually the one to plan all the family reunions and get togethers, so having to fill her shoes is a tall order. But I’m ready for the challenge (!)

Susanna's Surprise Birthday Party Decorations

My Mom and I divvied up all the tasks. While she did the research on cable car and thought through the decorations, I made the reservations and became the point of contact for all the guests. Her close friends and family dug through old albums to find photos representing ages 1-39 as I began putting together her birthday album. Her best friends Audrey and Lisa found ways to clear her schedule and come up with a story to keep her occupied on the big day. I made reservations for the cable car, food and cupcakes. My parents and I made running lists of all the food, drinks and decorations. Needless to say, there were plenty of trips to Michaels and the grocery store. Keeping in mind the small things such as the ice box, basket to carry the party favors and wine opener was a task in itself and one that my Dad happily tracked. There were many nights we spent talking about all the logistics and the fine details, and I think just about all of us — including her friends — nearly slipped when talking to Susanna and planning for her big surprise party. But we kept going. Susanna had her suspicions but couldn’t connect all the dots.

Hand Painted Cookies from Felix the Cook

Much of the planning unfolded one to two weeks before her celebration. For party favors, we worked with Felix the Cook to custom paint cable cars on sugar cookies. Aren’t they cute?! They are so Susanna! Pairing them with mini cable cars and custom made birthday tags makes for a great memento and keepsake. And yes, I went to every Walgreens in downtown SF to sweep the shelves for 30+ SF cable cars.

Susanna's 40th Birthday Cable Car Adventure

With all the logistics in place, a plan to pick up Susanna, and her friends and family at the door 20-30 minutes ahead of schedule (repeat, ahead of schedule!), the day went off without a hitch and we took to the streets of San Francisco in style.

A big thank you to all her friends and family for being part of her big day and making her epic celebration a complete surprise!

Happy Birthday Susanna!! We love you so much and wish all of your dreams come true!!

No Shortage of Drama at Scrapbook Expo

Scrapbook Expo Pleasanton

Susanna and I are live from Scrapbook Expo in Pleasanton. What appears to be your average Saturday afternoon ‘Crop’ is anything but average. Hard at work on designing layouts for our albums, picking out the right paper stock and obsessing over which tool to use, it’s easy to zero in on our projects and remain heads down at our table. However, being the avid scrapbookers that we are, we were already conditioned to keep our eyes and ears open for raffles and door prizes. Other than that, it’s rare you’ll find us turning our heads, except to take a peak at the projects our neighbor’s are working on.

Then all of a sudden, there were a few security guards (aka ‘rent-a-cops’) shuffling around and speaking into their walky talkies. The only reason they caught my attention was because there typically is no male presence in the room except for our emcee, Dave — and now there are three to five rent-a-cops glancing furtively at the table behind us, scoping out the old lady with the straw hat. Apparently she stole a few items from the Expo. What could it have been? Scissors, paper, stickers, who knows? Well, before we knew it, she was being escorted out of the Expo by ‘Security.’ This is a first. Well, never a dull moment. I guess we can just chalk this up to another ‘scrapbookable’ moment.

Scrapbooking with Maya Road

Maya Road Scrapbook Album

As with every Scrapbook Expo, I’m completely overwhelmed by hundreds and thousands of paper stock, stickers, ink, tape, glue dots, scissors and card-making machines that jump out at you at every direction as you enter the expo. My eyes dart back and forth from one scrapbook vendor to another and I find myself at the mercy of my wallet. If I come to Scrapbook Expo without a project in mind, I’m in trouble. I’ve gone from buying jewelry-making kits to acrylic albums to card stock to those fancy Copic markers. In fact my storage bins are spilling out with all these newfound hobbies that I should actually get moving on the handfuls of projects that I have already started. We all know that completing projects are a lot easier when you have a date appended to them and this time, I do!

Speaking of ‘I do,’ Kari and Richard’s wedding is just months away, I’m on the hook for a bachelorette present, something a little different from all the others. I’ve been intrigued by many of the scrapbook albums I’ve come across. Button Farm and Clear Scraps are a few of my favorites, and recently, Maya Road grabbed my attention.

As I came across Maya Road’s booth, I flipped through their album and was drawn to their mesh flower and needle work ‘make and take’. After a hearty ten minutes with the hot glue gun, I walked away with a solid embellishment to pop into my album. Combining a mesh flower with cardboard cut-out pink letters, needles and a spool of thread gave me a few ideas to stretch my scrapbooking creativity and skills. I was very happy with the embellishment and decided to pick up this Maya Road album kit for Kari’s bachelorette gift. It took quite a few hours to put together and I learned how to combine different textures and layer patterned paper on top of each other. Each page of instruction was a new adventure and a new technique.

The best part of this project was not just putting together the page, but it was inserting photos of the happy couple. I can’t wait to give this to Kari. I hope she likes it!!

Mother’s Day Tote from Cooper

Shutterfly Tote of Cooper Crazy Lee

Mother’s Day was extra special this year due to this unexpected surprise from my very own, Cooper Crazy Lee (aka Susanna). Since we’re all trying to go ‘green,’ my sister decided that carrying a tote featuring photos of us or the family might not be as appealing as carrying a tote of our four-legged, furry canine friend. I’m going to have to agree with her on this one and since neither one of us has kids (yet), she made a ‘Cooper photo bag’ for me and my mom (aka ‘Grandma’) and I absolutely LOVE it!!

Susanna went ahead and cherry-picked out a few photos of Cooper during his most photogenic moments. Well, when is he not photogenic?! The three to the left (from top to bottom) include a photo of Cooper on New Year’s Day wearing his 2016 shades, another one of him at the Berkeley Rose Garden and another one of him on his sixth birthday ready to blow out the candle on his ‘doggy’ cupcakes. And to the right is Cooper on his scavenger hunt for the Superbowl 50 sign over by the Marina. Cooper’s been on quite a few adventures and I’m more than grateful to now ‘carry him around’ and have him with me on the go.

Thanks so much Susanna and Cooper for the lovely tote!

Rainy Day Scrapbooking in Pleasanton

Scrapbook Expo Pleasanton 2016

With the rain coming down hard, it makes it an ideal afternoon to scrapbook at Pleasanton’s Scrapbook Expo. As Susanna and I were wheeling in our rollers, scrapbooking projects and mini fridge, we ran into a few fellow scrapbookers that we met over four years ago. It was quite a pleasant surprise. We each pulled out the group photo we took last time and agreed it was necessary to take another photo this year with the exact same pose, so we can begin a new memory together. The funny thing about running into them was that I’m still working on the 2011 album that I was working on when I met them. I had just set aside the book for a couple of years while working on a few other projects and ironically, decided to pick this one back up at this event. My goal is to finish projects before beginning new ones and it looks like I have all day and night to do it.

50 Sucks

50 Sucks

Brett is clueless. He has no idea. Friends, family, sangria, a Mexican fiesta and this tree of suckers await the birthday boy. Hats off to the hostess for putting together this party and adding such unique finishing touches to warm up the household. Simple DIY projects such as this this foam ball with dum dums present itself as the centerpiece and is very popular among both the over 50 and under 50. It reminded me of good childhood memories and yep, I’m still a fan of the cream soda flavor. And now there are bacon and popcorn flavored dum dums?! Hmmm, I think I’ll pass, but they were a hit with the kids.

Sitting next to this tree of dum dums is a homemade album featuring the birthday invitation along with an assortment of colored index cards for everyone to send a special note to the birthday boy.

And for this, it’s reason #108 why I love these simple, yet thoughtful DIY home projects.

Scrapbook Expo, Pleasanton

Scrapbook Expo Pleasanton - Tacky Tourist

Signed up for two workshops, Hello Friend and Copic Marker class. Got my wheelie fully equipped with glue dots, card stock, scissors and chipboard. Have my expo and crop night wrist band and my wallet. All set for Scrapbook Expo!!

I’m going to remind you, there is such a thing!! And today’s theme is “Tacky Tourist”, so here is our ‘tacky tourist’ snapshot. Enjoy!

Scrapbook Album - Hello Friend

As always, album-making is one of my favorite scrapbooking hobbies and my first workshop of the day is “Hello Friend” featuring products from Pinecone Press and Graphic 45, two of my very favorite vendors. This class focuses on various techniques: how to cover chipboard pages, how to create a distressed paper flower and how to adhere a binder mechanism. I love walking away with a unique, hand-crafted album with decorative ribbons and such fanciful paper. It’s going to make for a really nice gift.

For the second workshop, all three of us indulged in the Copic Marker drawing class. We’re all really excited to learn how to use these markers and blend to make special greeting cards with a bit of pizazz. It’s an alcohol based marker that allows you to blend light to dark and dark to light. Ah, I wished I discovered this sooner. It’s almost like painting with water colors. This will most likely be a new hobby on my website, so look out!

That said, it’s time to crop into the evening, cross our fingers for raffle prizes, sip some wine and buckle down on our scrapbooking projects.

I’m looking forward to the Scrapbook Expo in Santa Clara this coming August! Hope you decide to join in on the fun!

Santa Mail

Santa Mail - Family Christmas Card

Part of getting into the holiday spirit involves writing Christmas cards and saying hello to a few good friends that I might not have caught up with throughout the year. And lucky for us, our family trip to Orlando, FL made the front cover of each of the cards. Topped with a warm greeting, poinsettia stamp and gold seal, these cards are ready for a trip to the North Pole and back.
