Lee Family Christmas 2014 | CleeSF

All too soon, Christmas is here! This year, I’m making a batch of candied pecan yams and brussel sprouts with prosciutto and white wine sauce. Part of the fun with staying in the kitchen is sipping on a glass of wine, while also doing a bit of tastings before all the guests arrive.

This year’s warm Christmas Day is joined by two of my sister’s friends and of course, the family. With Christmas music in the background, a fireplace in the making and a glass of raspberry champs in hand, I think the family’s ready for a healthy competition of building gingerbread houses. I kid you not, it’s a lot easier than it looks.

Gingerbread Houses for Christmas | CleeSF

Each team had varying tactics. While others were set on designing the house, my dad stuck to building the foundation and making the house stand – even if it did take the entire tube of icing. Hands completely sticky and iced, confetti dots and gumballs stuck to his sleeves than on the roof, he was done in a matter of 20 minutes and left the house for my mom to design. In the meantime, my cousin Clifton was all about details in designing the exterior. He carefully squeezed the icing and aligned all the gum drops and licorice around each side of the house. WIthout testing it, he later realized the side of the house where he added a window and a door was really the rooftop. On the other hand, my aunt and I were all about designing the house partially and then moving on to the foundation. WIth a few collapsed houses and falling candy, we finally got it to stick. Our friends on the other side of the table stayed away from the classic design of windows, doors and garages, and instead branded it with their names. Clever.

When it came down to voting, Ricky and Zenaida were our two winners and each got Santa hats and reindeer antlers to wear for the evening – all in good fun.

Hope you too had a wonderful Christmas!

Santa Mail - Family Christmas Card

Part of getting into the holiday spirit involves writing Christmas cards and saying hello to a few good friends that I might not have caught up with throughout the year. And lucky for us, our family trip to Orlando, FL made the front cover of each of the cards. Topped with a warm greeting, poinsettia stamp and gold seal, these cards are ready for a trip to the North Pole and back.

SEI Scrapbook Album Kit

For Craft Day, I’m putting the finishing touches on an SEI Album I started at Scrapbook Expo. I love these mini scrapbook kits not only because they’re adorable, but because you get to focus on learning a new technique, applying it to your project and then doing a few customizations to make it your own.

SEI Scrapbook Album Kit

The instructions for this album focuses on creating specialized tags for embellishments and using an exacto knife to carefully make pockets out of the plastic encasing to house the tags and create fold-over flaps to extend the album.

And when you have a vibrant selection of paper stock with an assortment of knitted ribbons, trims and charms, you can easily turn plain album into a timeless piece.

Pretty neat and it’s a great takeaway and useful concept to apply to my next album.

First Book Club: The Goldfinch, Lemon Shooters and More

Our First Book Club: The Goldfinch

I’m excited to host and kick off our very first book club for The Goldfinch. Supposedly we all read the book in advance; however, for those who just barely opened the book, are still at the beginning or three quarters of the way done, be prepared for spoilers. I think I made it a little beyond the halfway mark. But bonus points to those who actually got through the entire 700+ page book this past month.

Our First Book Club: The Goldfinch

Of course no book club is complete without the wining and dining experience. Aside from the munchies and fruit and cheese platter (not photographed), tonight’s menu includes:

1. Spring salad with sliced apples, silvered almonds, goat cheese and raspberries with a champagne vinaigrette.

2. Mashed yams with creamy butter and milk.

3. Roasted vegetable (carrots, onions and bell peppers) pasta with garlic and white wine sauce, and a side of grilled chicken.

Book Club: The Goldfinch and Dessert Cups

And to top it off our meal, I sprung for making these yummy lemon shooters. Crumbled vanilla cake with lemon curd and whipped cream.

Bon Appetit!

Greetings from Cooper

Greeting Cards from Cooper Crazy Lee

While Cooper couldn’t be on this trip, he wishes his Grandparents a very Happy 40th Anniversary! He’s forever grateful to be surrounded by so much love and affection. He thanks you for all the treats, belly rubs, cocktail hours, neighborhood walks and endless games of fetch with the tennis ball.

Cooper wanted to make this special gift for you. He (and Auntie Susanna) went through old photos, gathered a few favorites from his family trips and put together a collage of greeting cards. He hopes you enjoy them.

Happy Anniversary from Cooper and he expects a belly rub when we all get home.

Cousins’ Dinner Party

Cousins' Dinner Party

It’s been a seven year tradition of us continuing to get together for our cousins’ date (minus our long lost cousin, Clifton, who always seems to be traveling the world). This time around, I’m playing chef and hosting. I’ve got the Living Fireplace running in the background, a full fruit and cheese platter, everyone’s champagne glasses full and the stove piping hot. Let’s get this party started.

Cousins' Dinner Date

On the menu this evening is a home-cooked, three course meal. We’ll start with a refreshing pear and gorgonzola salad topped with a champagne vinegarette. Then for a hearty main course is grilled chicken and pesto, tomato pasta with a side of spaghetti squash and creamy mushroom sauce. Because no dinner is complete without dessert, we’ll have strawberry shortcake sandwiched between two madeleines. My favorite.

I’m hoping this three course meal won’t put everyone into a food coma. In case it does, I’ve got a pot of coffee brewing because we can’t be falling asleep during our friendly game of Cards Against Humanities.

Cheers to a fun Cousins’ Date. I hope the rest of the gang will be in town for our next one.

Homemade Cinnamon Raisin Swirl Bread

Homemade Raisin Bread

I’ve always fancied making my own bread and now with my new bread-maker, I can make bread of all sorts: country white, buttermilk, wheat, oatmeal, chocolate banana – the possibilities are endless. This right here, hot out of the oven is cinnamon raisin swirl! The best part is cutting a slice or two right out of the bread machine, then lathering it with butter. The bread literally melts in your mouth.

Homemade Raisin Bread

Well, I’m finding that my investment in the bread-maker is one of the best purchases I’ve made recently… for today.

Here’s to my new bread-maker and many more loaves to come!

Santa Clara Scrapbook Expo

Santa Clara Scrapbook Expo

This is my 4th Annual Scrapbook Expo with the gang and this time we’re in Santa Clara. I’m going to admit, I am a forever fan. You can consider me as one of “them,” since I’m no longer embarrassed by carrying a roller bag of ever-growing supplies of paper pads, trinkets, stickers, glue dots and albums. In fact, I might even need a larger roller bag, since I am hardly able to zipper it up!

Santa Clara Scrapbook Expo - SEI Album

Today, I’ve signed up for the S.E.I. album-making class that focuses on specialized tags, fold-over flaps and pockets. I’m looking forward to learning a couple of new techniques. But before my class I’m warming up and working on this mini album. I just love these fancy letter blocks, “I Love Yuo” (!) Oops, I’ve gotta fix that one.

Santa Clara Scrapbook Expo - Make and Take

And today’s Make & Take session is all about my passion for sewing packaged up in this palm-sized heart. Working with mesh and a hot glue gun can get pretty messy sometimes, but everything usually falls into place — especially when you can dress it up with all these beautiful textures and embellishments. My favorite part was wrapping ribbon around the spool. What a clever touch to this little handmade project.
